Quick Overview
Hotels on the rugged east side of Maui are few and far between. The biggest and most popular option is the Hana-Maui Resort, a Destination by Hyatt property. If you are planning on an overnight stay for a night or two while exploring this side of the island, this is the perfect spot to book. Not only do you get amenities like the use of resort bikes, tennis courts, and daily yoga classes, this property comes with an excellent points redemption thanks to Hyatt’s generous awards program.
Booking the Hana-Maui Resort with Points
Hyatt uses an award chart to determine the points needed to redeem a free night. The Hana-Maui resort is an award category 7 hotel, which means that it will cost 30,000 points for a one-night standard redemption. The points price can go down to 25,000 during off-peak times and up to 35,000 per night during peak times.
As an example, we chose a night in October where you can book a standard room for 25,000 points plus a $45 nightly resort charge. If you were to book this room in cash, you’d pay $640 per night including all of the taxes and fees.
Just by opening up one card and meeting the minimum spend, you could potentially get FOUR free nights at this hotel. Or, spend one night here and then head to the Hyatt Maui in Ka’anapali for 3 additional nights and some beach time.
Why we love the Hana Maui Resort
Sometimes a trip to Hana is too much to do in one day and you want to slow down and enjoy the scenery more. This is a perfect hotel for that. It’s quiet, centrally located, ocean-front and comes with all of the amenities that you’d hope for in a hotel. They offer bungalows, suites, and villas, which really offer a serene escape. It’s a small resort with just 66 rooms spread over 75 beautiful acres.
Plus, you can book a single night (there is no two night minimum), which can be challenging to find in Hana.
And the point redemption is excellent, so you really feel like you’re getting a good trade for your points.

Things to know before booking the Hana-Maui Resort
Unless you are looking for an extremely quiet and secluded vacation, the Hana-Maui resort might be a little too quiet. There is little nightlife, and there are few restaurants.
The Hana-Maui is located on the windward side of Maui, which means things are beautiful and lush, but with that beauty comes rain, especially in the winter (October – April).
This is an older hotel, and the rooms are dated (no biggie), but it can be a little surprising when you first arrive. And lastly, the rooms do not have air conditioning. Honestly, that’s not a show-stopper for us because it’s cool over there, and we love enjoying the ocean breeze at night.
